Historically Brick Lane has been associated with slums and was Jack the Ripper territory. At one point, it was home to Jewish immigrants and there are still bagel shops in the area. More recently Brick Lane had a Bangladeshi community and was dubbed Banglatown. It is still a popular place for curry. Currently, the area is an artistic community. While street art is not legal, it is respected and not immediately whitewashed. Because Brick Lane street art is respected and appreciated the area draws international artists.

Brick Lane is the place to go for a vintage shopping spree. Be sure to bring cash! Sunday is busy on Brick Lane. There are many markets held including the flower market on Columbia Road.  You will also find unique cafes in the area.
