San Francisco California Street Art and Tacos, the Mission District

San Francisco street art is located in the Mission District.  The Mission District was once predominately Latino but in recent years it has become popular with the dot.com crowd. In fact, Mark Zuckerman lives in the area. Valencia Street is full of coffee shops, boutiques, and the best Mexican food.  This is one of the sunniest areas of San Francisco. The area is a popular food destination; even Anthony Bourdain has stopped in for a torta (That’s It Market). The street art, open-front stores, and music add grit to the neighborhood.

San Francisco Street Art is in the Mission District. There are 500+ murals, many of which are 3D. You will find murals on businesses, churches, garage doors, fences, restaurants, schools, and parks.  It is literally everywhere. Most of the art is commissioned for aesthetic purposes by the property owners.

The Mission District’s street art has been described as a visual record of cultural and social developments.  The art often documents the Latino experience and has social, political, religious, and historical messages.  Balmy Alley was the first area to be painted and is full of political statements; Clarion Alley has a younger vibe.

Don’t miss San Francisco Street Art while visiting the city. Take a food and street art tour, or, the area is easy to access via BART. Clarion, Balmy, and Lilac Alleys are full of art. There is also a large concentration of art along 24th Street between Mission and Hampshire. And be sure to have a taco while you are wandering around!

Be sure to check the San Francisco California Tourism Board website for upcoming festivals, special events, and what’s happening during your stay.
