How to Spend One Day in Zurich

8 am From the train station go across the river and ride the Polybahn up to the University for panoramic views. Add a love lock to Muhlesteg Bridge as you cross back over the river on your way to the Police Station to view Giacometti’s murals on the vaulted ceiling and walls at the entrance. Next, wander along the Schipfe and explore one of the oldest quarters of Zurich. Head up to Lindenhof Park for views of Grossmunster Church, City Hall, and the Limmat River. Now, walk towards the Aldstadt and take photos of Augustinergasse and Rennweg Streets. Refill your water bottle at the Münsterhof fountain before sampling Swiss chocolate and window shopping at the high-end stores of Bahnhofstrasse. If time permits, stop in the Beyer Watch Museum.

Tip: Food is expensive in Switzerland, and water is free from public fountains throughout the city.

Noon Stop Check out Zurich’s beautiful Opera House and grab picnic supplies at the open-air market for a picnic next to Lake Zurich. Relax on a bench watching the swans before taking a boat ride around the lake. Head to the Grossmünster and climb the stairs to the top of the tower for panoramic views. Walk along the river towards the Rathaus before checking out the famous Chagall Windows of the Fraumünster. Spend the rest of the day wandering the cobblestoned, shutters adorn pedestrian-only streets of Niederdorfstrasse. Be sure to splurge on chocolate and macaroons as you wander the old town.
