One Day in Chefchaouen Morocco
There is much conflicting information about a visit to Morocco. One person states they felt safe at all times and the next states they were pressured by touts, followed and obscenities were yelled at them. After three days of looking at the ports and transport options to reach Chefchaouen Morocco for a day trip, I made a decision and it ended up being one of the best travel decisions I have ever made. I booked a private tour with Pure Morocco for a day trip to Chefchaouen from Tangier. Here is how to do the same.

Day Trip to Chefchaouen Morocco From Tarifa Spain
First, book a hotel at your price point in Tarifa Spain. Tarifa is a great city known for its kite surfing and nightlife. It also offers easy access to Morocco by ferry. Book the early FRS ferry to Tangier Port for a 9 am arrival and prepay. The water in the Strait of Gibraltar is choppy, take motion sickness precautions. Arrive at the ferry terminal 45 minutes early and BRING YOUR PASSPORT. You must get your boarding pass and travel documents at the ferry terminal. Once on the ferry go straight to passport control and complete your arrival paperwork. Relax during the remainder of the one-hour ride. Your personal driver will meet you at the Tangier Port. Yep. Personal driver. In an air-conditioned car. With free water. And stops for photos. Hello, the life of the rich and famous. Except I’m not rich and famous and this is affordable! Sure, if you are taking a gap year and backpacking, pay the 5 euros and take the bus or cram yourself into a cab with a bunch of strangers. Otherwise, book the tour with Pure Morocco. They will pick you up and drop you back off at the port.
It is a 2.5-hour drive from Tangier Port to Chefchaouen Morocco. The driver stopped for a break of mint tea at a café overlooking the Rif Mountains. A personal guide will meet your car upon arrival. Chefchaouen is a small village with an amazing amount of things to see and do. The guide will lead you through Medina’s blue alleyways full of hanging flower pots and kittens. Take your time photographing the doorways, count the shades of blue, people-watch in Plaza Uta el-Hammam, check out the Kasbah Museum, eat a baguette with goat cheese, browse the souk for souvenirs, or learn about the famous Moroccan carpets without the hard sell.
Chefchaouen Morocco: Know Before You Go
The area is hot; dress conservatively in loose and light clothing. This is a cliffside village with a lot of stairs, so wear comfortable shoes. Restrooms may not have toilet paper. The village is cash only and there is an ATM in the square. 1 dollar equals 11 dirhams; price negotiating is common. Fridays are holy days and the shops will be closed. There will be fewer people in the village and you will get great photos. If you DIY this day trip, know that if someone offers to help you with anything, including directions, they expect payment. I have read more than half of the World’s cannabis comes from Chefchaouen. You may be asked if you wish to buy hashish or tour a hash farm. Although it may be tempting to have a Cheech and Chong moment, it is illegal. You will be told it’s legal but it is not… jail in Morocco would not be a good day.
