History of Australia’s Tangalooma Island Resort
Tangalooma Resort is a private resort located on Moreton Island known for its wild dolphin feeding. 35 years ago lights were installed on the jetty at Tangalooma Resort. The lights attracted baitfish. Resort staff noticed dolphins feeding on the baitfish each night and began hand-feeding them. A family of wild dolphins continues to return to the resort each night. The Tangalooma dolphins have names and each dolphin is known by the guides.
How to Feed Wild Dolphin
Tangalooma Resort runs a wild dolphin feeding program. The experience begins with dolphin education. Guests wash their hands before being led into the water waist-high. A guide hands you a dead fish, you hold the fish out into the water and a dolphin swims up and takes the fish from your hand. Dolphins have sensitive skin and there is no touching.
The program ensures the dolphins do not become reliant on humans for food. 10-15% of the daily food intake is provided by the feeding program. Be sure to ask an observer on the pier to take pictures of your bucket list experience for you. Moreton Island and Tangalooma Resort is an easy day trip from Brisbane Australia on the Tangalooma ferry.
