Peles Castle sits in Transylvania Romania's Carpathian Mountains. The Royal family went into exile in 947 and the castle was confiscated by the Communist party. At one point the Communist Party wanted to transform the Castle into a residence for protocol. Plans stopped after they were told the Castle had a wood fungus harmful to humans. The castle was closed to the public between 1975-1990. After the 1989 revolution the Castle was returned to the family and then back to the state. I don’t advocate dishonesty but that wood fungus story likely saved this amazing Castle and was genius!⁠

Are you a Game of Thrones fan? If so, you recognize these trees. The Dark Hedges are an avenue of beech trees forming a tunnel. They were planted in 1775 and some are 250 years old. It is said they are haunted and would be a fun spot for Halloween. The Dark Hedges are about an hour from Belfast and can easily be added to your DIY Game of Thrones tour.

Natural Bridges National Monument is an off-the-beaten-path adventure lover’s dream. The 8.7-mile loop trail under the monument's 3 iconic bridges involves steel stairs, ladders, walks along a narrow ledge, slick rock, creek crossings, and boulder scrambling. If you are not up to that hike, the scenic drive provides views of each bridge and the trail to Owachomo Bridge is short and easy. You will also find white canyons, cliff dwellings, and petroglyphs.
