Malaga Spain Street Art: Barrio de las Artes

Malaga Spain has so much to offer… sunshine, beaches, flamenco, and Andalusian architecture. It is a must-see destination when visiting Spain. Malaga is also the birthplace of Pablo Picasso and has the most museums in Andalusia. It makes sense for the city to revitalize a once forgotten corner into a Barrio de las Artes. Enter MAUS (Malaga Arte Urbana SoHo) and a thriving street art scene in Malaga Spain.

MAUS began the urban renewal initiative of SoHo to create the art and cultural quarter in 2013. SoHo is the triangle between the Contemporary Arts Center, South of the Alameda Principal, and the Malaga Port. The triangle is relatively small and the art is easily seen in an hour or so. With the revitalization came several tapa bars along the main pedestrian street. SoHo is close to Malaga’s main tourist attractions making it a great place for an evening walk exploring the art followed by a snack.

Malaga Spain’s street art consists of 50+ murals created by international greats such as ROA, Obey, D Face, Faith 47, De Least, and Ben Eine. Others have left their mark on open walls. Invader has made many contributions to the city including a flamenco dancer, a Picasso invader, and a museum-style portrait. Be sure to stop in the free Contemporary Arts Center after exploring the open-air museum on the streets of SoHo. Want to see more art? Head to Lagunillas to see the works of locals.

Be sure to check the Malaga Spain Tourism Board website for upcoming festivals, special events, and what’s happening during your stay.
