I had three days in Bordeaux during my 20-day trip through Southern France, and I knew I wanted to spend one of them in Saint-Émilion. I had heard about Saint-Émilion wine and the idea of wandering medieval streets, tasting Bordeaux wine at a château, and having a long lunch in a pretty French village sounded perfect. What I did not want was to spend hours figuring out which château to visit, how to get there, and how to get back to Bordeaux after a day of wine tasting.
That made a day trip to Saint-Émilion an easy choice. I found a full-day tour from Bordeaux that handled the transportation, château visits, wine tastings, and underground monuments. I just had to show up.

How to Get to Saint-Émilion from Bordeaux
Saint-Émilion sits about an hour from Bordeaux by car, which makes it an easy day trip. You can travel from Bordeaux to Saint-Émilion by train or bus, but getting around once you arrive takes more planning. If you want to visit the vineyards and wine estates outside the village, public transportation becomes less convenient. I did not have a rental car, so I briefly considered renting one for a few days. But then I ran into two problems.
First, France has strict drinking and driving laws, and I wanted to enjoy the wine tastings without worrying about driving afterward. Second, I had no idea which Saint-Émilion châteaux were worth visiting or how far apart they were. I also did not want to spend my vacation emailing wineries and trying to coordinate appointments. So I started looking for Saint-Émilion day tours from Bordeaux instead.
I ended up choosing the full-day Saint-Émilion: Village, Undergrounds and Châteaux tour organized by the Bordeaux Tourist Office. For me, it solved the biggest problem with planning a wine-country day trip: someone else handled the logistics.
The Best Day Trip to Saint-Émilion from Bordeaux
The tour lasted about eight hours and combined several things I wanted to see in one day: Saint-Émilion village, its underground monuments, two wine estates, and wine tastings. The coach picked us up at the Bordeaux Tourist Office at 9:45 a.m. From there, we headed into the Saint-Émilion wine region.

Saint-Émilion Day Trip Itinerary
10:45 a.m. Château Balestard La Tonnelle
We arrived at Château Balestard La Tonnelle around 10:45 a.m. The château is a Grand Cru Classé estate with beautiful views over the vineyards. We toured the vat room and barrel cellar and learned how they make the wine. Then we tasted two wines from the estate. It gave me an introduction to Saint-Émilion wine country before we headed into the village.
12:30 p.m. Explore Saint-Émilion and Have Lunch
We arrived in Saint-Émilion around 12:30 p.m. and had two hours to explore on our own. This was one of my favorite parts of the day trip to Saint-Émilion because we were free to wander. Saint-Émilion is small enough to explore on foot. The village has winding lanes, medieval stone buildings, cafés, wine shops, and boutiques tucked into the narrow streets. I had lunch on a terrace, browsed a few shops, and stopped for a glass of wine at the Cloître des Cordeliers.
2:30 p.m. Saint-Émilion Underground Monuments
At 2:30 p.m., we met at the bottom of the church tower for a one-hour guided tour of the underground monuments. We visited the Monolithic Church, the Catacombs, and the Hermitage of Monk Émilion. The underground tour added something different to the day and gave us a much better sense of Saint-Émilion’s history. If you want to visit the underground monuments, check the details of your tour carefully. Some Saint-Émilion day trips include the village but do not include a guided tour of the underground sites.
3:50 p.m. Château Champion
We met the bus again at 3:50 p.m. and headed to our second château, Château Champion. We tasted three wines there before leaving around 5 p.m. The bus then took us back to Bordeaux, where we arrived around 6 p.m.
Is a Saint-Émilion Day Trip from Bordeaux Worth It?
For me, yes. The tour gave me a full day in Saint-Émilion without requiring me to rent a car, research wineries, make château appointments, or worry about driving after wine tasting. That last part mattered more than I expected. I could actually enjoy the wine instead of keeping track of how much I had tasted before getting behind the wheel.
If you want to visit Saint-Émilion from Bordeaux and prefer someone else to handle the logistics, I would choose a full-day tour that combines the village, underground monuments, and at least one château.
