If you’re visiting Bordeaux and want to experience the surrounding wine country, a Médoc wine tour is an easy day trip from the city and one of my favorite experiences during my three days in Bordeaux.
The Médoc wine region is about an hour’s drive from Bordeaux and is famous for its Route des Châteaux, or Château Road. The countryside is lined with vineyards and some of the most recognizable wine estates in Bordeaux, making this an ideal place to learn about and taste Bordeaux wine.
I initially considered renting a car and visiting the wineries independently. In the end, I decided that joining a small-group wine tour was much easier. I didn’t have to worry about driving after wine tastings, researching individual châteaux, or arranging tasting appointments myself.
Here’s what my full-day Médoc wine tour from Bordeaux was like and what you should know before booking one.

How to Visit the Médoc Wine Region from Bordeaux
The Médoc wine region is approximately a one-hour drive from Bordeaux.
While you can rent a car and explore independently, many châteaux require advance reservations for tours and tastings. France also has strict drinking-and-driving laws, which was another reason I decided against driving.
Instead, I searched for organized day trips from Bordeaux and booked the From Bordeaux: Full-Day Médoc Wine Tour, operated by Ophorus. It turned out to be a great choice.
What Is the Médoc Wine Tour Like?
My Médoc wine tour was an eight-hour, small-group experience with a maximum of eight participants.
The itinerary included visits to three wine estates, time for lunch in the Pauillac area, and a drive along the famous Route des Châteaux with several photo stops.
Our group met at the Bordeaux Tourism Office at 9:30 a.m. and traveled through the Médoc in a comfortable Mercedes minivan.
One of the advantages of taking a small-group tour was that everything was arranged for us. We could simply enjoy the wineries and tastings without worrying about reservations, transportation, or navigating between the estates.
Médoc Wine Tour Itinerary
Château Dauzac
Our first winery of the day was Château Dauzac.
We toured the winery’s vat and barrel rooms while learning about the winemaking process before sitting down for our tasting.
These ended up being my favorite wines of the entire day.
Driving the Route des Châteaux
After our first tasting, we continued along the Route des Châteaux.
This stretch of the Médoc is worth seeing even if you aren’t a serious wine enthusiast. We stopped for photos outside several beautiful and well-known estates, including Château Margaux, Château Palmer, Château Pichon-Longueville Baron, Château Cantenac Brown, and Château Rauzan-Ségla.
The drive also gave us a chance to see more of the vineyards and countryside between winery visits.
Lunch in Pauillac
We arrived in the Pauillac area at approximately 12:30 p.m. and had 1½ hours of free time for lunch.
Lunch was not included in my tour, so everyone was free to choose where they wanted to eat.
An hour and a half was plenty of time. Pauillac itself is fairly small and there wasn’t much sightseeing to do once we finished lunch, so I wouldn’t necessarily plan on using this stop to explore extensively.
Château Lamothe-Bergeron
At 2:00 p.m., we met back at the minivan and continued to Château Lamothe-Bergeron, a Cru Bourgeois estate in the Haut-Médoc appellation.
This visit included a digital presentation explaining the winemaking process. Afterward, we tasted three wines.
Even if you don’t know much about Bordeaux wine before your visit, tours like this make the terminology and production process much easier to understand.
Château Malescasse
Our final winery visit began at approximately 4:00 p.m. at Château Malescasse.
We toured the barrel room and finished the visit with a tasting of two wines.
From there, we headed back to Bordeaux and arrived at approximately 5:30 p.m., making the entire excursion an easy day trip from the city.
Is a Médoc Wine Tour from Bordeaux Worth It?
For me, yes.
The biggest advantage was convenience. Visiting three wineries independently would have required researching estates, making individual reservations, renting a car, navigating between the châteaux, and figuring out who wasn’t going to drink. With the tour, all of that was taken care of.
I also liked the small group size. With a maximum of eight people, the experience felt much more personal than traveling on a large tour bus.
The day is best suited to travelers who want to learn about Bordeaux wine and visit several estates without spending multiple days exploring the region independently.
What to Know Before Your Médoc Wine Tour
Plan on spending most of the day on the tour. Mine ran from approximately 9:30 a.m. until 5:30 p.m.
Lunch may not be included, so check the current tour details before leaving Bordeaux. I’d also wear comfortable shoes because winery visits can involve walking through production areas and barrel rooms.
You don’t need to be a wine expert to enjoy the experience. In fact, one of the benefits of visiting the châteaux is learning more about Bordeaux’s appellations, grape varieties, and winemaking process as you taste.
Bring your camera. The Route des Châteaux and its historic wine estates are beautiful.
Should You Book a Médoc Wine Tour?
If you have a few days in Bordeaux and want to experience the surrounding wine country, I highly recommend setting aside one day for the Médoc.
I enjoyed being able to visit three different châteaux, taste a variety of wines, see the Route des Châteaux, and learn more about Bordeaux wine without having to organize the logistics myself.
