One Day in Antwerp Belgium: The Perfect Day Trip Itinerary

If you only have one day in Antwerp Belgium, don’t waste it trying to see everything. Antwerp is surprisingly easy to explore on foot, and you can see the beautiful Central Station, wander past diamond shops, walk through medieval streets, have lunch in Grote Markt, see the Scheldt River, and finish with one of the best views in the city without turning your day trip into a marathon.

That’s exactly how I’d approach an Antwerp day trip. Start at Antwerpen-Centraal and follow this itinerary toward the historic center and river, choosing one museum rather than trying to squeeze in five. I’ve included a few optional stops along the way so you can swap diamonds for chocolate, churches for art, or museums for more time sitting at a café. Here’s how I’d spend one day in Antwerp Belgium.

One Day in Antwerp Belgium at a Glance

Start: Antwerpen-Centraal railway station
Finish: MAS and the Eilandje waterfront
Best for: First-time visitors arriving by train
Getting around: Mostly walking, with a taxi or tram back to the station if your feet are done
Don’t miss: Central Station, Grote Markt, Cathedral of Our Lady, Vlaeykensgang, Het Steen, and MAS
Choose one: DIVA, Chocolate Nation, Red Star Line Museum, Plantin-Moretus Museum, or another museum that interests you
Wear: Comfortable walking shoes. You’ll use them.

How to Spend One Day in Antwerp Belgium

8 AM: Start at Antwerpen-Centraal

Don’t rush out of the station when you arrive. Antwerpen-Centraal is one of the sights you’ve come to see, so take a few minutes to look around before heading into the city. You’ll exit near Antwerp’s Diamond District. Walk through the area and window-shop before heading toward the historic center. If diamonds interest you, stop at DIVA, Antwerp’s museum for diamonds, jewelry, and silver.

Chocolate sounds better than diamonds? Chocolate Nation sits across from Central Station, making it another easy first stop. Just remember that either museum will take time away from the historic center, so I’d choose one rather than both. Continue toward Meir, Antwerp’s main shopping street, and walk through the ornate Stadsfeestzaal.

10 AM: Explore Historic Antwerp

Make your way toward Hendrik Conscienceplein and St. Charles Borromeo Church. The nearby Nottebohm Room at the Hendrik Conscience Heritage Library is gorgeous, but don’t build your itinerary around walking straight in. It only opens to individual visitors during limited periods and otherwise requires a tour or special event. Check the schedule before your trip.

From here, continue toward the Cathedral of Our Lady. Look for the Nello and Patrasche sculpture outside the cathedral, then duck into Vlaeykensgang. This tiny medieval passage is easy to miss, which is part of why I like it. You can walk through in a few minutes, but it feels completely removed from the busier streets around it. If you want to go inside the Cathedral of Our Lady, allow extra time. Otherwise, admire the Gothic exterior and continue to Grote Markt.

Noon: Lunch in Grote Markt

Grote Markt is surrounded by historic guild houses and makes an easy place to stop for lunch. Yes, it’s touristy. With only one day in Antwerp, I’m fine with that. After lunch, walk toward the Scheldt River. Stop at Het Steen, Antwerp’s medieval fortress, and explore the area along the river. If you’d rather keep walking than visit another attraction, continue along the waterfront and enjoy the river views.

2 PM: Take an Optional Walk Through St. Anna’s Tunnel

If your feet still feel cooperative, head to St. Anna’s Tunnel. The pedestrian tunnel runs underneath the Scheldt and connects the historic center with Antwerp’s Left Bank. The old wooden escalators make getting down there almost as interesting as walking through the tunnel itself. You don’t have to cross all the way and stay on the other side. Walk as much as you want, then return to the historic center.

3 PM: Walk to MAS

Follow the river north toward MAS, the Museum aan de Stroom. If you enjoy museums, explore the galleries and learn more about Antwerp, its port, and its connection to the wider world.

Short on time or museumed-out? Head for the MAS boulevard and panorama instead. The elevated view over Antwerp is one of the best reasons to come here.

4:30 PM: Choose MAS or the Red Star Line Museum

Trying to properly visit both MAS and the Red Star Line Museum late in the afternoon will make your day unnecessarily rushed. Pick the one that interests you more.

The Red Star Line Museum tells the stories of people who left Europe from Antwerp aboard Red Star Line ships in search of a new life in North America. If migration history interests you, I’d choose this one. If you’d rather spend your final afternoon exploring Antwerp’s history and enjoying the city view, stay at MAS.

6 PM: Return to Antwerpen-Centraal

Take a tram or taxi back toward Antwerpen-Centraal rather than automatically adding another long walk. If you have time before your train, stop for dinner or a Belgian beer and give yourself a little time to enjoy the city without another attraction on the schedule.

More Things to Do in Antwerp Belgium

Have extra time or want to swap something out of the itinerary? These are the Antwerp attractions I’d consider.

Visit DIVA

Learn about Antwerp’s centuries-old connection with diamonds, jewelry, and silver.

Tour Chocolate Nation

Chocolate Nation sits conveniently near Antwerpen-Centraal and takes you through the story of Belgian chocolate. This is an especially easy substitution if museums full of paintings aren’t your thing.

Visit KMSKA

The Royal Museum of Fine Arts Antwerp, or KMSKA, has an extensive collection of Belgian and international art. Give it enough time to enjoy it rather than squeezing it between other stops.

Visit Museum Plantin-Moretus

This is one I’d seriously consider if you love books, printing, or unusual historic interiors. The Museum Plantin-Moretus explores the Plantin-Moretus family’s printing business and collection.

Visit the Rubens Experience and Garden

You can still visit Rubenshuis, but don’t expect to tour Rubens’s historic home. The artist’s residence is closed for a major renovation. The Rubens Experience, garden, and library remain available to visitors.

Walk Along Cogels-Osylei

Head to the Zurenborg neighborhood to photograph the elaborate Art Nouveau and eclectic architecture along Cogels-Osylei. It’s away from the main walking route, so save it for a longer visit.

Tour De Koninck Brewery

Learn about Antwerp beer and take the interactive brewery tour at De Koninck. This makes a good alternative if you’d rather drink Belgian beer than visit another museum.

Visit Middelheim Museum

Middelheim combines contemporary sculpture with a large outdoor park. It’s outside the historic center, so I wouldn’t add it to the itinerary above unless you’re willing to remove something else.

Walk Through Stadspark

Need a break from museums and historic buildings? Walk through Stadspark or bring lunch and have a picnic.

Visit Den Botaniek

Take a quiet walk through Antwerp’s botanical garden when you need a little green space.

Visit Antwerp Zoo

Antwerp Zoo sits right beside Central Station, which makes it particularly convenient at the beginning or end of your day.

Browse Meir

Walk Antwerp’s main shopping street and pop into Stadsfeestzaal to see its ornate interior.

People-Watch in Groenplaats

Grab a seat and take a break near the Cathedral of Our Lady.

See Street Art

Look for murals around Antwerp or follow part of the city’s comic and street-art routes.

Visit St. Paul’s Church

If you enjoy historic churches and art, add St. Paul’s Church to your list.

Have a Belgian Beer

You don’t need a complicated plan for this one. Find a café or traditional pub, order something local, and enjoy the fact that you’re no longer checking things off a list.

For current festivals and events, check the Visit Flanders Belgium website before your trip.

What to Skip or Check Before Your Antwerp Trip

Museum Vleeshuis: The museum has closed for a major restoration.

Rubenshuis: The historic artist’s residence remains closed for renovation. You can visit the Rubens Experience, garden, and library instead.

Nottebohm Room: Don’t assume you can walk in. Public access depends on the season, scheduled tours, exhibitions, and events.

Is One Day in Antwerp Enough?

One day gives you enough time to see Antwerp’s main sights, especially if you arrive by train and concentrate on the historic center. Choose one or two places you really want to go inside. Spend the rest of the day walking between Central Station, Grote Markt, the cathedral, Vlaeykensgang, the riverfront, and MAS. If Antwerp turns out to be one of those cities you don’t want to leave, stay overnight and add KMSKA, Cogels-Osylei, Middelheim, a brewery tour, or more time in the museums.

Easy Day Trips From Antwerp Belgium

If you have another day in Belgium, Bruges, Ghent, and Brussels are all easy cities to add by train.

Ghent

Ghent combines Gothic architecture, canals, waterfront cafés, a medieval castle, Belgian beer, and plenty of places to stop for waffles.

Bruges

Bruges feels completely different from Antwerp. Expect canals, medieval architecture, cobblestone streets, bridges, market squares, chocolate shops, waffles, fries, and Belgian beer.

Brussels

Brussels gives you grand architecture, Art Nouveau, comic-book murals, cafés, chocolate, beer, waffles, and the famously tiny Manneken Pis.

Final Thoughts on One Day in Antwerp Belgium

Antwerp works particularly well as a day trip because you don’t need a complicated transportation plan once you arrive. Walk out of one of Europe’s most memorable train stations, follow the city toward Grote Markt and the Scheldt, choose a museum that actually interests you, and finish with the view from MAS. You’ll see plenty without spending your one day in Antwerp checking your watch every ten minutes.

Check Visit Flanders Belgium website for upcoming festivals, special events, and what’s happening during your stay.
