Alhambra Palace and Gardens, an Unforgettable Day in Granada

The Alhambra Palace is a 13th Century fortress on the hill overlooking Granada Spain. This UNESCO World Heritage site is an incredible example of Moorish architecture not to be missed when visiting Andalusia. You will find gorgeous gardens, archways, mosaics, carvings, inscriptions, and honeycomb ceilings. The Alhambra of Granada is the fourth most visited monument in Spain. 6,600 people are admitted to the grounds each day with 300 entering Nasrid Palace every 30 minutes. You will need at least 4 hours to explore the complex. It is best to spend at least two days in Granada. The city is full of history and things to do. But, if you only have one day to spare, it is worth the trip. Many companies offer day tours to Granada and the Alhambra Palace and Generalife from Malaga or Seville. Enjoy your time out of the office!

Generalife

Generalife, or Garden of the Architect, was built as the summer palace and place of respite for the rulers of Granada. The highlight of Generalife is the Patio de la Acequia or Water Garden Courtyard. The courtyard consists of a long rectangular pool lined with flowerbeds and fountains. Several paths are leading through arched hedges into various pavilions.

Alcazaba

The Alcazaba is a walled military fortress that was once a stronghold against the Christian Crusaders.  Built in the 11th Century, it is the oldest part of the Alhambra. Restoration began at the beginning of the 20th century. You will find watchtowers, dungeons, and a keep. Be sure to climb the walls and towers for incredible views of Granada. Charles V Palace is a Renaissance palace with a circular courtyard. It was added to the complex by the Holy Roman Emperor in 1527. The palace was neglected to the point of the roof caving in and is still being restored.
