Construction Took 14 Years Work on Mount Rushmore began in 1927 and wasn’t completed until 1941. Although the initial plan included carving the presidents down to their waists, funding issues and the start of World War II meant that only their faces were completed. 2. Designed by Gutzon Borglum, but Finished by His Son Renowned sculptor Gutzon Borglum designed Mount Rushmore and oversaw its construction. However, he passed away in 1941, just months before its completion, leaving his son, Lincoln Borglum, to complete the project. 3. Dynamite Was the Main Carving Tool Over 90% of the mountain was carved using dynamite. Workers would blast away large portions of rock, and then sculptors would refine the details using smaller tools, a process that required skill and precision. 4. Each Face Is as Tall as a Six-Story Building The faces of the presidents are massive, each about 60 feet tall. To put that in perspective, that’s roughly the height of a six-story building! Each eye is about 11 feet wide, and each mouth is approximately 18 feet wide. 5. Secret Hall of Records Hidden Behind the Monument A hidden chamber, called the Hall of Records, was carved behind the faces. Although Borglum envisioned it as a room to hold important historical documents, the chamber was never fully completed.     Off the beaten path alert! Convent of Capuchos in Off the beaten path alert! Convent of Capuchos in Sintra Portugal is not well known, in fact, we were the only people there when we visited. The property is deep in the forest and roads leading to the monastery are unmarked. The convent itself is built into the boulders of the Sintra Mountains and camouflaged by trees, symbolizing harmony between people and nature. The monastery consists of a chapel, dormitories, choir, cloister, library, penitential cell, infirmary, kitchen, and latrine all connected by narrow passageways and tiny staircases carved into the stone.
